Long safari from the coast

Four days and three nights to cross the Tsavo area, the country around the Taita hills and the plains of Amboseli, without rushing any of it.
This is the longest trip that starts from the coast without taking a plane. Four days are enough to cross Tsavo East, pass through the western side of the area and the Taita hills, and reach Amboseli with the energy left to look around.
The difference from a three-day trip is not 'one more day': it is that every transfer stops being a race. You stop where it is worth stopping, you reach the property before dark, you go out at dawn without having to make up for the delay of the day before.
Day 1 · morning
I pick you up from where you are staying while it is still dark. The stretch to the park is long and I say so up front: we stop for a proper break, not a five-minute pause. We go in through the planned gate already set up for a game drive.
Day 1 · afternoon
We head out in the hours when the heat drops and the animals start moving again, then we are back at the property before the light goes. The first evening is also there for you to settle into the rhythm of the trip.
Day 2
We cross the area towards its western side, where the bush gives way to hills and volcanic outcrops. It is the day with the most varied landscape and usually the one with the most comfortable temperature. The detail of the stops depends on the route confirmed for your dates.
Day 3 · morning
An early start. The road to Amboseli is the toughest of the trip: uneven surface, dust, few places to stop. We reach the property for lunch or shortly after, depending on the actual timing.
Day 3 · afternoon
Amboseli is more about watching than searching: the vegetation is low, you can see a long way and the animals gather where there is water. We go out in the late afternoon, when the light drops and the air becomes breathable.
Day 4
Out at dawn, breakfast and then the road home, which takes up the whole middle of the day. We reach the coast in the evening and I take you straight to where you are staying.
I meet you at your accommodation in Watamu, Malindi or Mambrui, at a time that depends on where you are staying and on the gate we plan to use. I confirm it in writing along with the full itinerary.
Four days with three overnight stays have to be built in advance: I need to hold the properties, and in busy periods they close early. Write to me as soon as you have your dates, even just to find out whether I am available.
The group stays small, with a window seat for everyone. You can choose the private option or share the vehicle: in the second case the pace is set by the group, not only by you.
In the dry season the vegetation drops and the animals gather near water: you see more and you breathe dust. After the rains the green comes back, the photographs improve and the wildlife spreads over enormous areas; some tracks can become impassable, and in that case the route changes.
In Amboseli, Kilimanjaro often stays hidden behind cloud, sometimes for days. It is not a piece of luck anyone can arrange: nobody can promise you that mountain, and I do not.
No sighting is guaranteed. Over four days the odds go up simply because you spend more time in the parks, not because anyone is controlling the animals.
The three nights are in different lodges or tented camps, one for each area crossed. The exact properties depend on availability for your dates and are named in the written proposal, with the meals included in each.
The standard of the properties varies a lot from one area to the next. If you have a preference — simpler and closer to nature, or more comfortable — tell me beforehand: after confirmation, moving costs time and availability.
Four days in a row on rough ground test your back and your neck, and every night means a change of property with bags to move. If anyone in the group has mobility limitations or back problems, write to me before booking: in some cases it can be adapted, in others it is honestly better to choose a shorter trip.

Tsavo, the Taita hills and Amboseli in four days sounds like too much, and John said so before we booked. He rearranged the nights so the driving was spread out. It worked. The vehicle was comfortable and the driver careful.
It depends on three things: where you are setting off from, how many days you have and the pace you want to travel at.
A short safari is a first meeting with the savannah: it gives you the idea, but it compresses the transfers. With more days available the rushed journeys are cut back and there is more time inside the park, in the hours when the animals really do move.
Either way I'll explain the real travel times and the alternatives that exist, including when the honest answer is that a particular safari does not fit into the days you have.
When both formats are available for your dates I set them side by side: the price changes, and so do the flexibility over timings and the number of people travelling with you.
The proposal you receive lists only the options genuinely available in that period. I don't set out arrangements that I then cannot put on.
No. The animals are free, they move and they follow nobody's programme: sightings cannot be guaranteed, not in the savannah and not at sea. If someone promises them to you, know that they are promising something they do not control.
What I can tell you is how we look for them: keeping our distance, respecting the park rules, staying on the tracks, without chasing and without forcing an approach for the sake of a photograph. Respect for the wildlife comes before any promise.
Many of them can be, but there is no single answer: the duration, the length of the transfers and the timings all have to be weighed against age. A dawn departure with hours on the road is not the same thing for a four-year-old and for a twelve-year-old.
In the form all I need is the number of children and their age ranges. Names, dates of birth and other personal details are not required: those, if they are needed at all, come only when a property or a park asks for them.
