A long day north of Malindi

Water in the morning, dunes and a Swahili village in the middle of the day, a canyon at sunset: a full day, described for what it is.
This is the longest day among the trips I run from the coast. We set off north in the morning, move from water to sand to the country inland, and get back after sunset. It is three different places lined up one after another, and the sequence only works if you accept that it is a full day.
The first part depends on the tide, because access by boat has a window rather than a set time. Mambrui is a village on the coast north of Malindi, with a long Swahili history and dunes facing the sea. Marafa is the sandstone gorge inland, which we visit last because in low light the colours separate out.
Stage 1
I pick you up early at your accommodation. The exact time is not mine to decide: the tide decides it, and it shifts the usable window by about fifty minutes a day. That is why confirmation comes the day before.
Stage 2
We reach the spot chosen for the day by boat, where the low tide leaves sand and still water uncovered. We stay for as long as the tide allows: when it comes back in, we head back. Anyone who does not want to get into the water stays on the sand or on board, no problem.
Stage 3
We move on to the village. We walk the sand streets, see the mosque with its pillar tomb and reach the dunes behind the beach. Mambrui is not a tourist site: it is a place where people live, so we pass through as guests and we ask before photographing anyone.
Stage 4
We stop to eat and to sit still for an hour. It is a break that is needed: the second half of the day is the harder one and it is better faced rested.
Stage 5
We leave the coast and head inland. The last stretch is on an unsurfaced road and at certain times of year it is rough: it is the least comfortable part of the day.
Stage 6
We walk down into the sandstone gorge and climb back out before dark. The sunset is watched from the rim, then we drive back to the coast. You get to your accommodation in the evening, late: factor that in when you plan dinner.
Be clear about what you are booking: this is a full day, usually between nine and eleven hours door to door, with a section by boat, a section on foot in sand and a final stretch on an unsurfaced road. It is not a relaxed sightseeing outing, and it is right that you know that beforehand rather than afterwards.
The departure time depends on the tide that day, so it changes from date to date. I confirm it in writing the day before, together with the estimated time you will get back, which will be after sunset in any case.
If, once we have talked it through, it sounds like too much, we split it: one trip for the sea part and Mambrui, another for Marafa in the afternoon. I would rather offer you two days that work than one that is stretched thin.
The first stop only exists inside a low-tide window, which does not fall at every hour and does not fall at the same hour every day. I cannot move the tide: all I can do is tell you in advance which dates work better.
In rough seas the boat section is dropped and the day is rebuilt around the other stops. In heavy rain the track to Marafa can become impassable and the trip moves.
The colour of the canyon depends on the light that afternoon: under an overcast sky it stays duller. That is how it is, and it is not something you can book.
This day is not suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties: you get in and out of a boat, walk a long way in the soft sand of the dunes and face a steep descent into the canyon with a climb back out at the end. It is not possible in a wheelchair. If anyone in the group has limitations, write and tell me beforehand: in many cases it is better to replace this trip with two separate half days.

Every proposal states explicitly what it covers: transport, entry fees, guide, meals, accommodation and activities. And it states what is left out as well, because that is usually where misunderstandings begin.
Before confirming you always receive a written summary with these points, so you can read it through calmly and ask me about anything that doesn't add up.
Many of them can be, but there is no single answer: the duration, the length of the transfers and the timings all have to be weighed against age. A dawn departure with hours on the road is not the same thing for a four-year-old and for a twelve-year-old.
In the form all I need is the number of children and their age ranges. Names, dates of birth and other personal details are not required: those, if they are needed at all, come only when a property or a park asks for them.
Safety comes before the programme. If the weather worsens, if the sea is not workable or if conditions in the park change, we talk it through and decide whether to alter the programme, postpone it or replace it with an alternative.
The conditions that apply in these cases are set out in the proposal you receive, so you know in advance how things are handled when the day is not the one we expected.

If the dates then move, we start again from the new ones. It is more useful to think it through from a rough idea than to wait until everything is decided.
